Waste-Free Wednesdays
Here at Coal Point Public School, we take sustainability seriously. During our recent waste audit with Stage 2, we noticed a large amount of single-use plastic in lunch boxes. This goes directly to landfill and takes up to 1000 years to decompose. As a result of our waste audit, we will begin a new initiative, Waste-Free Wednesdays. Every Wednesday, we encourage families to pack a waste-free lunch.
Tips for a ‘waste-free’ lunch:
- Use lunch boxes with separate compartments or use small reusable containers.
- Use reusable drink bottles.
- Use tight fitting containers for sandwiches and items that would traditionally use foil or cling wrap.
- Involve the children and only pack what they will eat.
- Use leftovers from the previous night.
- Buy or make your child’s favourite snack foods in bulk or larger packets and portion into individual containers for example; crackers, fruits, vegetables, yogurt, slices, dried fruits and cheese.
- Google ‘low waste lunches’ or ‘nude food lunches’ for inspiration!
Please try to avoid:
- Foods that are pre-packed as individual serves, such as chips, muesli bars and squeeze yogurts.
- Cling wrap, foil or snap lock bags.
- Poppers.
- Single use plastic forks and spoons.
Why?
- At Coal Point PS, we are working towards becoming a more sustainable school.
- We want to empower our students to think about their impact on the environment and be excited about becoming life-long eco-warriors!
